Selecting and purchasing your first handgun is a very important decision (You never forget your first, LOL)  Do not simply walk into a gun store and pick the newest and flashiest firearm you saw your favorite influencer using on Instagram.  There are several things to keep in mind to ensure you make an informed and safe decision.

Function

What do you plan to use the handgun for? Will it be for home defense, concealed carry, target shooting, or a combination of these? Different types of handguns are better suited for different purposes, so it's important to choose one that meets your needs.

Fit

How does the handgun feel in your hand? Is it comfortable to grip and shoot? Does it have the right size, weight, and balance for you? It's important to choose a handgun that fits your body and shooting style, as this can affect your accuracy, recoil control, and overall performance.

Price

How much are you willing to spend on a handgun? Handguns can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the make, model, and features. It's important to choose a handgun that fits your budget and offers good value for the price.

Training

Owning a handgun comes with a great responsibility, and it's important to be trained in safe handling, storage, and use. Working with a vetted firearms instructor and practicing regularly at a shooting range to improve your skills and confidence is highly encouraged.

By considering these factors and doing your research, you can make an informed and safe decision when buying your first handgun. As with any major purchase, it is advised that you “try before you buy.” Think about it, you wouldn’t buy a new car without taking a test drive. Find a shooting range that allows you to rent firearms and test a few different options before making a decision.
